Jobs in Jacksonville, Florida
History of Jacksonville
Jacksonville is the seat of Duval County and the largest city in Florida State. It has an estimated population of 807,815. In 1791 it was founded as the town of Cowford for its location in a narrow point of St. Johns River that was used as a cattle crossing but was later renamed Jacksonville for the first Florida territory military governor and 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson. In 1562 the French were the first European settlers in the area and they established Fort Caroline but were shortly eliminated by Spanish forces in 1565 and they renamed it Fort San Mateo. For nearly 200 years it remained in Spanish hands until they lost in the Seven Years War to the British but again returned to Spain in 1783 when the Americans drove the British out of the U.S. in the American Revolutionary War. In 1821 the area finally came under U.S. control and was named Jacksonville the following year.
